One Day: Book Review

One Day by David Nicholls is one of the most successful British novels of recent years, it's now a soon-to-be-released film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. I can only hope that lead actors Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess can do justice to the characters that Nicholls has created.

Synopsis: It was a beautiful summer's day in Edinburgh, the 15th of July, 1988 . For Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley, it is the morning after the night before; too many drinks at their university graduation has led them back to Emma's flat where they have spent the night talking and kissing. The next morning is awkward – Dexter is keen to make a hasty retreat while Emma would like them to spend the day together.

From this unpromising beginning develops a friendship that span in two decades, yes...twenty long years. One Day, as the title suggests, charts the lives of the two friends – by showing the readers what they are doing every year on the anniversary of the date they met. This clever structure – one chapter for each year up until 2007 – means that each year reveals something new about one or both of the characters and their feelings for each other. Many momentous occasions has happened like a death, a birth – but the two constants throughout the novel, Dex and Em, are always in contact with each other in some way on that same date when they first met.

Sometimes the characters are irritating, particularly Dexter. He is a good-looking and charismatic guy who developed a career in television but he does not always treat Emma well. Emma, meanwhile, pursues a career first as a teacher and then as a writer, encountering some disastrous relationships along the way.

David Nicholls writing style is simple, straightforward and uncomplicated. This book is definitely worth reading.

When I was about ten years old I have seen a movie with the same concept. I cannot remember the title, but I remember that the man and the woman meet every year, same time - same place, until one of them passed away. I cried a bucket of tears! I cannot wait to see One Day movie, which will probably be shown in June or July of 2011.
