Marriage and Art

I admire couples who have been married for a long time. In this fast-paced life, we all know how difficult it is to stay married. Temptations abound, personality conflict and other factors have to be considered, as George Washington once said, " Marriage is the most interesting event of one's life, the foundation of happiness or misery".

When I see old couples, I always ask them how long have they've been married. An example of this, Mr. Rodney and Mrs. Jane Martinez of Creations whom I met at iNegros Fair. They've been married for 36 years. Both of them agreed that the key to their successful marriage is give-and-take. Sir Rodney even added, "if she's mad, I'll keep quiet, and vice-versa".

John and I have been married for 11 years now, but we've been together 18 years total. Life is not always a bed of roses, but through it all we've managed to work on our differences - John is a homebody, I'm 'lakwatsera' by heart; he's quiet, I'm loud; I'm sweet, he's not. We're totally on the opposite poles. From the movie Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen said, "Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are ever so well-known to each other or ever so similar beforehand, it does not advance their felicity in the least. They always continue to grow sufficiently unlike afterwards to have their vexation; and it is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life".

With this, I have to conclude that marriage is like an art - you have to nurture it, practice over and over to create that one perfect art so that in the end it will inspire you, comfort you and keep you company.

  2. Couples who stay married that long these days are very admirable, indeed. My parents-in-law will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in December this year. It's hard for JJ and I to match that as we married in our 30's already. But who knows? Here's to lifelong marriages, ladies!!!
