First Heartbreak

In today's modern world, heartbreak is usually associated when someone suffered a failed relationship or loss of a loved one. Heartbreak is more than that as it is defined as “crushing grief, anguish, or distress that is caused by many reasons such as loss of possession, loss of job, change of lifestyle, etc.

Last January 30, as we were packing our bags for migration in UK, Rafael came to me...

El: Mom, Juancho is crying.
Me:  Why? Did you two fight?
El: No, Mom. Juan is sad. He is brokenhearted because he won't be able to see his best friend Julian.

                                                   Julian                                           Juan

I clearly understood what my son was feeling.  I remember crying inconsolably when I was about 5 years old when Inay (a distant relative) was about to go back to her place in Tiaong, Quezon. That was my first heart break. I still remember the pain even after 35 years.

To appease Juancho, I asked him to go with me and I'll take his photo with Julian. When I arrived at the Racpan's place, Julian's brothers and nanny said Julian is also crying. It broke my heart even more seeing that these two young souls are experiencing this kind of pain.

The pain of being a part with a beloved friend can be enormous, especially if the friend brings so much joy in to one's life.  I knew that these young boys were hurting tremendously.

On our first night in UK house, I made sure Juan will be happy with the blocks I made...

Then before going to sleep, Juan happily called me, "Mom, look how nice I made my room"...

I didn't get what Juan was saying, I was too tired from the whole day's cleaning.  Juan then pointed out, "you see Mom, I spelled Julian's name".

When I was pregnant with Juan, I contemplated on naming him Julian but we didn't want him to be confused as Julia's twin brother so I decided to get my husband's Pinoy version of John.

There are no sure-fire ways to console your child after a heartbreak but with love, care, sincerity and patience their world will soon be alright.

"Friends show their love in times of trouble, not in happiness."

  1. oooh, I can feel Juan. I hope I won't experience this kind of heartbreak. I knew how painful it is for once I've been into this kind of hurting. Ouchy.
Yeah, I saw the two always playing together and witnessed how close and bonded they are.
