B Hotel Alabang

As a token for covering Maya Kitchen's baking event last year, I was given a B Hotel Alabang overnight gift certificate which I used yesterday to have that well-deserved bonding activity with my husband.

What we liked about B Hotel:
1. Location is not near the noise of  the commercial area.
2. The room we got is overlooking the beautiful houses in Alabang
3. The staff  are professional and courteous, especially Ivan.
4. The internet connection was fast! I was able to upload videos in youtube in a short time.
5.  Accessible to skyway and Alabang Town Center.
6. All rooms are non-smoking

What I we didn't like at B Hotel"

1. Although the room is clean and all and that the king-sized bed and pillows were very soft, we weren't able to sleep well because we felt uncomfortably itchy.
2. No swimming pool.
3. No bath tub.

Embutido ni Mama

I was never a fan of embutido when I was young until I met my mom-in-law 1993.  It was October 24 1993 when I first tasted Embutido ni Mama. It's almost 24 years ago but I just started learning how to do this favorite dish in the #Mendiolables gathering. Embutido ni Mama is always a special request by relatives and friends.

According to myfilipinorecipes.com, the origin of Filipino Style Embutido can be traced when Spain colonized the Philippines for three and a half centuries beginning in the middle of the 15th. During that time, the Spaniards introduced different recipes of their sausages such as Chorizo, Longaniza, and Embutido. It's for this reason why Embutido is regarded as a generic term for sausages in the Spanish language. In other words, "Embutido" belongs to a category of sausage recipes during the Spanish colonial period.

Over the years, Filipinos have created their own version Embutido and I'm  proudly sharing Mama's very own embutido recipe.

Ingredients: Ground pork, minced hotdog, hotdog cut lengthwise, celery, powdered milk, sugar, salt, pepper, onion, raisins, eggs, boiled eggs, cheese, malunggay, margarine,

Cooking Instructions: In a bowl, combine all ingredients (except the hard boiled eggs, cheese and hotdogs  cut lengthwise) and mix well until blended. Place a mound (about one cup per roll) of meat mixture in a sheet of plastic. Put the slices of egg, cheese and hotdogs in the center of each mixture and form your desired length of embutido. When molded and rolled, place it on top of aluminum foil wrap and roll.  Steam for an hour. Remove from steamer and let cool.

High School Friends

People build friendships in different stages of life but I have to admit high school friends stays the strongest even if meeting seldom happen.

Last February Fe, went on vacation in the country and I'm so happy she contacted us for a mini reunion. We agreed to meet for just an hour or two because Fe and her husband had a lot of appoitments that day. Well, it took us til the closing hour of Shangri-La Mall before bidding goodbye.

The get together was made even more fun with our respective spouse around.

Moldex Residences Aspen

It's the first time I booked an accommodation in Baguio using Booking.com, unfortunately when I reached Moldex Residences Aspen there wasn't any one in the unit where I booked. I panicked because it was raining hard and there weren't enough time to find a place since my husband was too tired to drive for we left Manila at 3am.

Thank goodness for good people like Ms. Beth, the owner of Unit 202 and 203 who heard my dilemma and asked if I need a place to stay.

I'm highly recommending Ms. Beth's Unit 202 and 2003 in  Moldex Residences Aspen for three reasons. First, the condo is newly-built. Second, the unit is well-kept. Third and most importantly, the owner is kind and easy to transact with.

Chef Didier's Table

I met Chef Didier and Merna some three years ago when Joy Felizardo invited me for an intimate merienda at the couple's condo. Then a year after to try their Brazil Spa in Makati.

Earlier this year Merna asked me to like an FB Page, Chef Didier's Table. I dutifully liked it but didn't expect they've finally moved to Baguio.

It has been 2 or 3 years since we last went to Baguio because, using my kids' words, "we're sawa na". Then I saw Merna's post Chef Didier's Table Baguio post. To cut the long story short, the #Mendiolables went to Baguio to support Chef Didier and Merna's new bed and breakfast business.

Chef Didier’s Table is a short distance from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). The concept is different from a typical restaurant, in France, it would be called “table d’hôte” (hosted table). It is only open for one group at a time, from minimum of 4 to 15. Reservations are required 36 hours ahead and confirmed with deposit. More than 20 menus are available, from regional French, to various European offerings, American, Asian, Moroccan. They can also create a customized menu according to your preferences. Breakfast, Lunch, Merienda and Dinner menus are available. In addition they also offer catering services and Chef Didier can be your private Chef in your own home for any event. Last but not least, they also offer 4 rooms for nightly stays (will soon expand to six), with choice of traditional Filipino or International Breakfast.

Reminders:

1. Serves merienda (minimum of 8 pax) for non-staying guests
2. Serves breakfast (minimum of 8 pax) for non-staying guests
3. Offers combination of plated and buffet for International breakfast and Filipino Breakfast, minimum of 8 pax for non-staying guests
4. Lunch and dinner starts at P249 up to 399 per person for in house guest only (minimum 4 pax).
5. If you prefer to stay at Chef Didier, overnight accommodation is P500/person with Filipino breakfast and  P600/person with international breakfast.
6. They also offer more elaborate menus and works around the clients' budget as well as dietary preferences.
7. At least 36 hours minimum advance reservation (48 is best) if you have request for certain dishes.
8. They also cater for special events at the clients' preferres venue.
9. They make cake for Free if you reserve for 12 guests.
10. For pricing and menus, consult them by calling at 0921 572 8408, or message Chef Didier's Table in Facebook.

As for the accommodation, they have 6 big rooms on the second floor that can accommodate friends and families who wish to stay overnight without the noise of the city. I must tell you honestly, if you're particular about the aesthetics, this is not the place for you because this is a simple house and it's a bit far from the commercial center. We, the #Mendiolables though love the warm accommodation, the endless talk about life, family and food with Chef Didier and Merna. More than the facade, Chef Didier's place is about great food and great company.

I like that they do not have television on the second floor because Julia and Juan had fun with John while I watched and laughed.

About Chef Didier:

Chef Didier was Born in Paris France, but grew up in a small village where nature was generous with fresh produce, eggs, dairy and poultry. An apprenticeship in Pastry Arts in 1976 at the young age of 14 was the beginning of a long and fruitful career. The program consisted of working long hours at a nearby Pastry shop, while also attending classes at a school in the city of Versailles.  School curriculum was more on theory, math, science.

After graduating 3 years later, Chef Didier moved to the city of Nimes in the south of France, where he was employed as a commis for a prestigious Pastry, Chocolate and Ice cream shop. After returning to his home a year later he worked for 2 years in a large pastry and bakery facility supplying desserts and breads for hotels and restaurants.

With a strong desire to travel and explore the world, Chef Didier applied and was accepted for his first Pastry Chef position in Studio City California, for a high end pastry shop, he was 20 years old. Once the contract ended, returning to France was difficult and when another opportunity presented itself to go back to the US, he did not hesitate. What was supposed to be a 1 year contract turned into 21 years living in America.

Mostly working for 5 star hotels, from Detroit, Houston, to Washington D.C, his experience matured. It was in his last 10 years in the US, that while being Executive Pastry Chef, for the prestigious St Regis Hotel that he started developing his cooking skills.

Nominated 5 years in a row as Pastry Chef of the Year by the Washington Restaurant association as well as many press reviews, TV interviews and shows, propelled him at the forefront alongside the local and national elite of celebrity Chefs.

Often the Pastry Chef chosen for Charity dinners, as his course was the last he would spend time with the other Chefs, observes and absorbs their techniques.  Surrounded by the best Chefs in America from all over the world, spending time by their sides was an amazing experience.

After leaving the US in 2005, Chef Didier’s international experience grew with jobs in North Africa, the Middle East, where he met his wife Merna, and the Philippines.

Chef Didier was hired as Executive Pastry Chef in the pre-opening stages of Raffles/Fairmont hotel in Makati. After a year of Sabbatical to help Merna open her business, Chef Didier was brought in to open Novotel Araneta Center.

But big city stress, pollution, noise started to take its toll, and looking for a more independent lifestyle, brought Chef and Merna to the City of Pines, Baguio.

Tawid Silver

I've learned about tawid Silver thru Diego, one of the three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Rimando in 2005. Diego was one of the graduating Architecture Students from UP Diliman who designed our room in 2004. I've been planning to visit and feature Tawid Silver for a time. Finally last Wednesday, even if it's such a short notice, Dan the youngest son and Tita Baby accommodated the #Mendiolables.

Tawid (pronounced as ta-wid) is an Ilocano-Igorot term for pamana or passover or handover. This tawid word was cheerfully explained by Mrs. Baby Rimando, the owner of Tawid Silver in Baguio.

Tawid Silver is a silver jewelry making family business of the Rimando’s that was started by Tita Baby 20 or more years ago. I must say that in terms of quality and craftsmanship, Tawid Silver's products are amongst the best I've seen from the many silver companies not just in Baguio but in Manila as well.

Tita Baby and Dan toured us inside their showroom and workshop where we saw how their skilled craftsmen make their one-of-a-kind silver heirloom.

Before saying goodbye, Tita Baby opened her home and handed me a silver earrings and choco flakes for the kids. Their home is field with artworks and photos of their family.

If you'd like to order and own beautiful pieces of silver, contact Dan at 09175240230. Going to Tawid Siver is a bit hard especially if the gps isn't responding well. Plus their driveway is steep so I suggest you call Dan first at 09175240320 for directions.

Belo Baby Talc-Free Powder

I'm a very protective mom, to the point of becoming a helicopter mom, especially when it comes to health, safety and security of my three children.

My husband and I have a history of asthma when we were kids. I'm particularly careful when buying baby powder so as not to trigger any allergic or astmatic reaction to my kids. Aside from that, my kids' pediatrician Dr. Leyva actually discouraged the use baby powder to Julia, Rafael and Juan because as she said, 'In the Philippines, most baby powder (if not all) contains TALC.  Talc, by the way, is an ingredient that has been the subject of debate and lawsuits in the US because of its supposed link to cancer.

I was sad when Dr. Leyva told us to discontinue using baby powder because let's face it, it helps alleviate heat especially during summer. Today I'm happy to announce  and share with you  a new product offering of Belo Baby - BELO BABY TALC-FREE POWDER. This product gives me joy and peace of mind because it is all-natural with 0% harmful chemicals just like the other Baby Belo products that are crafted with care for babies and the whole family.

1.  It is certified hypoallergenic.
2. It is dermatologist-tested and carefully formulated without talc, gluten, phthalates, parabens, dyes, and most common allergens.
3.  It smells naturally good even twins Julia and Rafel finds it chic and cool to use and bring to school.
4.  It is safe for sensitive skin so I'm relieved that my youngest son Juan can now use powder again.
5.  It is crafted with care for the most delicate skin, for the most meticulous moms like me.
6.  It is made from  all natural and finely milled rice and maize
7.  The price is affordable, PhP 219.75 at 65 grams,
8,  It comes with a free puff

I love using Belo Baby Talc-Free Powder especially now that it is extremely hot but don't just take my word, go ahead get yourself one. LIBEL

Maintaining a cheerful disposition in this high-tech, fast paced life is difficult especially when you're active in social media. There are plenty of rules that one must follow so as not to get into trouble and later on be sued for libel.

For bloggers like me who wish to be on a safe side or if you are a victim of cyber-bullying and planning of suing someone, feel free to read this article I copied at http://www.lectlaw.com.

LIBEL

Published material meeting three conditions: The material is defamatory either on its face or indirectly; The defamatory statement is about someone who is identifiable to one or more persons; and, The material must be distributed to someone other than the offended party; i.e. published; distinguished from slander.

Criminal Law. A malicious defamation expressed either in printing or writing or by signs or pictures, tending to blacken the memory of one who is dead, with intent to provoke the living; or the reputation of one who is alive and to expose him to public hatred, contempt or ridicule. It has been defined perhaps with more precision to be a censorious or ridiculous writing, picture or sign, made with a malicious or mischievous intent.

In briefly considering this offence, we will inquire: 1. By what mode of expression a libel may be conveyed; 2. Of what kind of defamation it must consist; 3. How plainly it must be expressed; 4. What mode of publication is essential.

The reduction of the slanderous matter to writing or printing, is the most usual mode of conveying it. The exhibition of a picture, intimating that which in print would be libelous, is equally criminal. Fixing a gallows at a man's door, burning him in effigy or exhibiting him in any ignominious manner, is a libel.

There is perhaps no branch of the law which is so difficult to reduce to exact principles or to compress within a small compass as the requisites of a libel. All publications denying the Christian religion to be true; all writings subversive of morality and tending to inflame the passions by indecent language, are indictable at common law. In order to constitute a libel, it is not necessary that anything criminal should be imputed to the party injured; it is enough if the writer has exhibited him in a ludicrous point of view; has pointed him out as an object of ridicule or disgust; has, in short, done that which has a natural tendency to excite him to revenge.

If the matter be understood as scandalous and is calculated to excite ridicule or abhorrence against the party intended, it is libelous, however it may be expressed.

The malicious reading of a libel to one or more persons, it being for sale on the shelves in a bookstore; and where the defendant directed the libel to be printed, took away some and left others; these several acts have been held to be publications. The sale of each copy, where several copies have been sold, is a distinct publication and a fresh offence.

The publication must be malicious; evidence of the malice may be either express or implied. Express proof is not necessary for where a man publishes a writing which on the face of it is libelous, the law presumes he does so from that malicious intention which constitutes the offence and it is unnecessary for the prosecution to prove any circumstance from which malice may be inferred. But no allegation, however false and malicious, contained in answers to interrogatories, in affidavits duly made or any other proceedings, in courts of justice or petitions to the legislature, are indictable. It is no defence that the matter published is part of a document printed by order of the house of commons.

The publisher of a libel is liable to be punished criminally by indictment or is subject to an action on the case by the party grieved. Both remedies may be pursued at the same time.

Practice. A libel has been defined to be 'the plaintiff's petition or allegation, made and exhibited in a judicial process, with some solemnity of law;' it is also, said to be 'a short and well ordered writing, setting forth in a clear manner, as well to the judge as to the defendant, the plaintiff's or accuser's intention in judgment.' It is a written statement by a plaintiff, of his cause of action and of the relief he seeks to obtain in a suit.

Black and White

It's summer and swimsuits in different styles are plastered all around. I wanted to post a super daring photo but I can't since I have conseravative children 😁😬😆.

This photo was taken by my husband  at Hotel Jen last year. As soon as I got home, I sent it to my guru and adviser Nora, and ask her if "malaswa" (obscene). Since Nora is conservative like my children, she politely said no the idea of posting it in social media.

But what the heck, we only live once, so here courageously posting this black and white photo that would have been here a year ago.

Let me know your thoughts by commenting below, malaswa ba?

You can either choose to live joyfully or gloomy."

BLOGGERS PULIS

I am by heart a joyful person. I try to live up to my name even when the going gets tough. At times though I have to be realistic and take action when necessary.

I was bullied online by two men in 2014. As a married woman with three children I will not allow any one to tarnish my reputation and so I had to do what I had to do online as well.

Did the two troll stop? Yes. They both blocked me in FB. Probably, hopefully, prayerfully that they have learned their lesson.

I moved on, forgave them and continue to live a happy-hectic life until Concerned Blogger messaged me...

At dahil medyo alarming ang pagkakasulat ni Concerned Blogger, I Googled 'BLOGGERS PULIS' which brought me to its Facebook Page. I watched the video, ako nga! Blind item kaso ang pagkakamali ni Bloggers Pulis ay ang maliwanag na evidence ng paninirang puri dahil sa pag post nya ng video ko! I saved the copy of the video as evidence for whatever legal purposes it may serve me in the future. Eto ang screencap ng mga pinost ni Bloggers Pulis.

Hindi ako basta basta naniniwala sa mga sabi sabi kaya minabuti kong i-message si Corrine at itanong kung sya nga si Bloggers Pulis...

I was about to make a group chat with Concerned Blogger and Corrine to hear both sides of the story but then Corrine blocked me.

For those who are not updated with the chismis of the blogging world, this is how it started...Last February 23, 2017 I attended AJINOMOTO Event with Coco Martin as the endorser.

Since Bloggers Pulis clearly posted my video with the intention of ruining me to all PRs, as she posted, "...blacklist to all prs", the big question is sino si Bloggers Pulis? Kung matunton ang tunay na nagmamay-ari nitong mapangyurak na page na ito, liable for libel ba sya?

Brigada Eskwela at City of Mandaluyong Science High School

To show my support and appreciation to MandSci for honing the intelligence of my twin kids, I accepted the responsibility of documenting Brigada Eskwela at City of Mandaluyong Science High School. It was my first time to join Brigada Eskwela  since Julia and Rafael used to study in private schools. I wasn't aware how big and important this activity is until today.

Aside from that, it was actually fun to join and be one among the other stakeho lders- principal, teachers, school staff, community and the city as a whole. It brought back that bayanihan feeling I grew up with. With this post, I hope to encourage more parents to be involve, join Brigada Eskwela and be a part of volunteerism that brings benefits first and foremost the students.

Brigada Eskwela is proof that an effective partnership between the government and citizens is possible.

About Brigada Eskwela:

To improve the country's public school education, DepEd addressed the issue through the Adopt-a-School Program (ASP) in 1998 and in order to reach even more people, DepEd brought the program to the communities in 2003 through Brigada Eskwela also known as the “Bayanihan Para sa Paaralan.
This initiative allowed a partnership with other stakeholders who are willing to share resources tIn a few years, the spirit of volunteerism reached 200 partners and generated P6 billion worth of programs and interventions.

Strawberry Bingsu at Hobing Korean Dessert Cafe

My daughter is a fan of Korean culture, from Kpop group BTS to food and more. For a long time Julia's asking me to eat at Hobing Korean Dessert Cafe located at the 4/F Mega Fashion Hall of SM Megamall  but we'd always end up hurrying to get back home.

Last week even if we just ate at DS Cafe, I gave in and treated Julia because she deserves it for being an honor student.

We ordered strawberry at P350. I musst admit it's a bit pricey compared to other strawberry bingsu. For its lovely presentation, I gve it a thumbs up. The sweetness level is just right for my taste but I was hoping there's more milk in it.

The store itself is actually small which has a few tables only. Although the price seems to be a little high for 'shaved ice', the bonding time with my daughter was well worth it.

Women Empowerment

Women Empowerment or WE is a  series of  talks that invites women to events where they learn about matters that matter to them. We is a collaboration between Rowena Suarez and Joy Felizardo.
Joy is a Lifestyle Blogger, Businesswoman, Baker and Event Organizer while Ro is an Expert Financial Planner.

I wasn't able to attend their first talk, Women and Money, at Simple Lang at Ayala Triangle Gardens because I was out-of-town. It was about starting up a business.

I made sure to free my schedule for the second series of talk, Throw a Party Without Getting Broke, held at Stew Comfort Food by Chef Michelle Adrillana at Addition Hills, Mandaluyong. #We Series 2 was all about DIY-ing a simple party and how budgeting and early planning can make any occasion-planning fail-proof.

Ro shared her knowledge about money matters, budgeting, savings, starting out a business, keeping up a business and essential topics every woman needed to understand, to be able to gain freedom from stress, financial uncertainty, poverty, poor health, personal insecurities and many others.

Apart from the lovely discussion of Rowena Suarez (@JustAskRo) on 6 Pillars of Wealth, we shared with Chef Michelle’s best-selling pasta dish, Quattro Formaggi and Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

The afternoon was also a delightful experience having to be the first bloggers to taste @SpringValleyPH Mango and Banana drink and @PoptopsPH.

Everyone is welcome to attend their strings talks, make sure to follow their updates at their Facebook page- @WEManila.

There are plenty of products sent in my place everyday for review and feature. I try all of them but I only write about those that really shows what it promises. One of them is Eximius Miracle Oil.

At http://www.eximiusmiracleoilmarketing.com, it is written that Eximius Miracle Oil is a very unique health supplement that can penetrate and kill the virus and cancer cells. It has the ability to penetrate and rapidly absorb in lipid coated and envelope viruses. It is considered better than that of nanotechnology (nanosized molecules) due to its excellent penetration in the Blood Brain Barriers without utilizing bile salts that result in absolute energy. It is known to be a medical food specifically for people who undergoes a medical procedure and chemotherapy. It is the secret to reverse medical condition such as HIV, Diabetes, Renal Failure, Cardiovascular Problems, Cancer and Immune System deficiencies".

It was sent to me months ago but it took me this long to write about it because I couldn't find all the videos I took to document my experience with Eximius Miracle Oil's. Finally, tonight I found 'em all!

I can't say anything about the above mentioned claim but I'm sure that Eximius Miracle Oil helped my daughter's legs stretch marks lighten with only a week of use.

I also learned that my cousin, Jay, who has Stage 3 Cancer is also taking Eximius Miracle Oil. He saw in my FB Page that I unboxed Eximius Miracle Oil and he told me it has helped him with his present condition.

The Best Time to Circumcise

Circumcision is a procedure when the foreskin that covers the end of a penis is removed during surgery. Circumcision is a controversial issue that varies from country to country. Some countries believe that boys do not need circumcision, unless there is a medical need.

In the Philippines, circumcision is carried out as part of medical, religious, social and cultural reasons.  It is a time when boys are considered and welcomed as a young man. Circumcision is a counterpart when girls had their first monthly period and welcomed as a young lady.

My eldest son Rafael asked to be circumcised at the age of eleven, that was three years ago. Last December my youngest son said, "Mom, cut na ko this summer". I knew already what he meant because Rafael said the same thing. But I didn't get it immediately when Rafael came to me and said, "Mom, cut na". I was baffled and said, "baby, you just had your hair cut last week". He then said, "No Mom, I mean cut na, you know, circumcision".

So if you're asking, "when is the best time for circumcision?", the answer is if your son is ready for it.

Dr. Mark Joseph Avendano did the surgery.

Mango Tree Bistro in Trinoma Mall

My love for Thai food blossomed when John and I went in Thailand in 1999.  Their food is amazingly delicious. I particularly like the way they serve their rice, always with lemon on the side. And because I like salty food, Thai fish sauce is always on my list when eating at a Thai resto.

Thai cuisine is certainly one of the favorite cuisines of the world and since I've been craving Thai food after 3 days on the road to feature Zoocobia in Pampanga, Zoobic Safarin in Subic and Nature's Healing Home in La Union, we went at Mango Tree Bistro in Trinoma Mall for late lunch.

Mango Tree has a casual fine dining restaurant with warm hospitality coming from all its staff and crew, ensuring that customers is satisfied with their food by using only the best and freshest ingredients and an array of nutritious Thai organic herb and spices.

We tried their Siam Platters (good for sharing for 3 to 4 persons), Nachos with Salted Egg Chips, Salmon Sisig, Mango Cheesecake, Thai Halo Halo, Ice Cream with Salted Egg Custard. If you like salted egg chips, a must try is their Salmon Crispy Skin Crackling.

Flatiron and Sentro 1771 in Uptown Mall

Tagug City isn't my usual place to go to but for great food and meeting awesome people not event traffic and migraine can stop me from going.

Last night, 1771 Group of Restaurants had a back to back celebration for Flatiron and Sentro 1771 in Uptown Mall, Flatiron's First Year Anniversary and the Grand Opening of Sentro 1771 in Uptown Mall.

Chef Vicky Pacheco, Executive Chef and COO of 1771 Group of Restaurants, friends, guests and media were there to enjoy the rainy night.

Sentro 1771’s unconventional yet superb take on Filipino cuisine brings it to the pedestal as one of the most celebrated restaurants in the country. Its invasion in Uptown Bonifacio aims to cater for guests who are hungry and wanting the most satisfying treat to the palate. It can also accommodate events in its cozy function room fit for an intimate gathering of 10-30 guests.

Drawn from its name, Flatiron Brisket 6 is the restaurant’s house specialty, definitely, a must-try! The meat is slowly cooked for 6 hours to achieve the perfect fusion of tasteful ingredients and the right amount of tenderness.  One can also devour on its Chicken Piccata, thinly-pounded chicken breast fried in butter and tossed in lemon butter sauce. The richness of the lemon butter sauce is balanced by the lightly creamed spaghettini. Another comfort food that will surely fill a growling stomach is the Corned Beef Skillet sautéed with onions and tomatoes that comes with sunny side eggs and a choice of rice or potato bread rolls.
