Nanay Na, Tatay Pa

It was Sonora Dodd  from Spokane who initiated the idea of celebrating Father's Day Festival to honor her father, Henry Jackson Smart, who single-handedly raised six kids after the death of his wife.

In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge first recognized Father's Day because of its popularity. President Richard Nixon finally signed a permanent national observance of Father's Day in 1972, stating that the festival is to be held on the third Sunday of June.

As for the Mendiolables, we celebrate Father's Day twice - the third Sunday of June of course is for my husband. The other celebration, can be a pre or post Father's Day party, is dedicated to my single mom friends who are bravely raising their kids on their own.

I wouldn't know how it is to be a single parent and struggling with money and things like that because I have John. But I've seen how my friends handle pressures and a lot of other issues in life, as a whole, kaya saludo ako sa mga nanay na, tatay pa!

Happy Father's Day to strong and loving moms out there!
