It's the first day of classes for most schools today. I prepared so much for this day, starting last Friday when I ironed the school uniforms.

Even when we used to have house helpers in the past, I take pleasure in ironing my children's clothes . It used to take me less than an hour to finish 5 sets of uniforms for my 3 kids. But last Friday, it took me more than that to accomplish the task. Could it be because Julia, Rafael and Juan are taller now that they have bigger and longer uniforms or it's just that I'm getting slower because of getting older? I'd like to think it's the former rather than the latter.

I haven't slept since 3am. I was too excited for today is Juan's first day in big school. I do not want to play favorites, but being the bunso, Juan made me jittery because he's a bit shorter than his Ate and Kuya when they were in Grade 1. I'm afraid he might be bullied in school or that he might pee on his shorts.

As always, Juan is one independent boy. I wanted to carry his bags but he refused. When I waved to say goodbye, he was totally cool. What made me sad is that he didn't give me a hug and a kiss - not even a flying hug and a flying kiss that he used to do when he was in Kinder. How time flies...

Madami-dami kaming nalibot at napuntahang malalayo at magagandang lugar nitong araw ng tag-init. Naglambing ang ikalawa kong nanay (stepmom) na ipag-swimming naman sila. Dahil medyo mahirap ng i-byahe ang Tatay namin, ipinagpasya ko na sa Grotto Vista na lamang sila dalhin. Malapit lang kasi ang lugar sa bahay ng panganay kong Ate. Malapit din sa Novaliches, kung saan ang dalawa ko pang kapatid na babae ay nakatira. Dito na lang para kako makapunta ang lahat.

Maaga kaming mag-asawa doon para magpa-book ng rooms for an overnight stay. Ang kaso, sa parking pa lang, ay sus, punong-puno! Aatras na sana kami, mukha kasing wala ng lugar na maliliguan pa. Hindi ko na muna pinababa ng kotse ang asawa ko, mga anak at pamangkin. Binisita ko muna ang loob ng resort. May kalumaan, pero malaki naman. May ilang pa rin namang lamesa na paglalagakan ng mga gamit at pagkain. Kaya, sige, dito na nga.

Simple man ang lugar at punong-puno ng taong humahabol din ng huling hirit sa tag-init, walang katumbas na saya ang dulot ng pagsasama-sama naming pamilya. Mas masaya pa sana kung nakadating ang Ate Rose, Ate Sheila at bunsong si Ching.

Stuff Cake

This stuff cake I did for Grace To Be Born

Gift giving shouldn't be boring. Whenever I stand as Sponsor for Baptismal or attending first birthdays of my inaanaks, I'd prepare Stuff cake. Others call it diaper cake or nappy cake. I like to call it stuff cake because I don't just put diaper but also other stuff in it. It takes time and practice to do one. Well, having lots of inaanaks (100++) made me better in making one, two, three...

Step by step instructions on how to make your own Stuff Cake:

1. Prepare your materials: Rubber bands, double adhesive tape, cake board, and your chosen gift like baby shampoo, stuffed toys, powder, etc.

2. Roll each diaper tightly and secure it by using rubber band.

3. In the middle, place your chosen core. I used 2 cans of milk for this project.

4. Start by doing the first or bottom layer by circling around the core using the rolled up diapers.

5. To hold each ring together, I use ribbons or big rubber band to secure everything.

6. For the top later, repeat the steps from the bottom layer using less rolled up diapers

7. For aesthetic purposes, I used baby shirts and towels to cover the body. Then added baby shoes and baby feeding bottles and pacifiers on the top.

Stuff Cake I did last May 19, for my newest inaanak Zoe

Tip: Start small. I practiced using face towels, then moved to hand towels until I got the hang of it.

This hand towel cupcakes sells at Php 60.00. Making your own will cut the price in half or less.

1 layer stuff cake. The cover is a dress, inside stuff include baby powder, shampoo, diapers, wash cloth and undies.

This one is one of my earlier works. See the body of the cake? It's uneven and unpolished. With practice, time and effort I got better at making it.

As I've mentioned above, gift giving shouldn't be boring. Instead of the usual, wrap it in a box, present gifts in a basket.

Chocolates given to my kids' teacher last Valentine's Day. Instead of giving it as is , I bought heart shaped canisters and placed the chocolates inside. That way, the hardworking teachers can re-use the canisters.

The huge puzzle collections is already a shoo-in for Guinness Book of World Records. Currently, Tita Gina (as she is fondly called by family and friends) is working on a 32,000-pieces puzzle, the largest-size jigsaw puzzle worldwide. She'd soon be registering for Guinness to beat the current title holder from Brazil who has 238 jigsaw puzzle collection.

Bataan will always be a place dear to me because my father was born in Abucay, Bataan. When I was in elementary and high school we used to frequent the place to visit relatives. We stopped visiting when Mama passed away.

A few months back, a travel television show featured a visually appealing tourist destination called Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan. While watching, I knew in my heart it was time to go back to my father's birthplace. I told my husband about it and immediately planned an itinerary in my mind.

Last Monday, we hit the road at 5am to pick up Nora and her kids in Balintawak. With few stop overs, we reached Bataan Tourist Center at 6:30am to get brochures or ask informations about all of Bataan's must visit places. Unfortunately, the center opens at 9am.

With the help of Mr. Gilbert Fabrez of Patrol 117 we were able to get directions on how to get to Mt. Samat and Pawikan Center.

The Pillars of Wealth Creation According to Rowena Cuyco-Suarez

Yesterday's intimate lunch with Financial Planner and television host Rowena Cuyco-Suarez at Chef's Quarter is one of the best I had for I learned more about the best way to save and invest for my children's future and for retirement.

Ms. Suarez said that only five percent of Filipinos have planned for retirement, “that’s because many of them believe that their kids will take care of them when they grow old. But this is a cycle we have to break. Because by the time you do retire, your kids will have their expenses to think of.” Saving for the far-off future is probably a stretch for many Filipinos, and Suarez argues for a change in mindset. “Savings and investments are independent of each other. These two create wealth that covers the things that you will need. From the day you were born to the time after you join your creator; you will need money. It’s not being morbid or materialistic. It's just being practical.” she added.

She also debunks the myth that only millionaires can invest. It all starts by setting aside 20 percent of one’s income, which could mean a modest amount of 4,000 monthly. This amount may not earn a lot of interest in the bank but managed properly in the right financial institution, a regular Php 4,000-a-month savings can accumulate enough wealth to create a payload of Php 4 million in one or two decades. “In every investment, you have to have a goal,” Suarez says. “We ask about goals, dreams, and aspirations. We also update ourselves in what’s happening to our client’s life. Like if he’s sending a new kid to college or got a new job, how will that development affect his finances?”

6 Pillars of Wealth Creation:

1. Income replacement. This is the insurance to cover the family’s welfare should the main breadwinner pass away. Suarez gives an example of one form of financial planning. “If the family spends Php 500,000 a year, to survive the loss of their breadwinner, they’d have to multiply this annual income by, say, 10 years. Their protection amount”- or the monies that would serve them in good stead at the death of a parent-“would be Php 5 million.”

2. Health protection. This is the available income for the inevitable sickness or hospitalization .Suarez says that current research shows 48 percent of Filipino families contending with the illness of a loved one will take the out-of-pocket expenses from their daily budget. Neither do they have a substitute for the lost (or temporarily disabled) generator of revenue. She advises, “If you have protection for health, you will get the money you need for hospitalization and medical expenses from a fund that you have set aside for that. The money for your monthly expenses will not get touched at all.”

3. Education funding. Setting aside funds for the kind of education that will help children develop a bright future.

4. Retirement, which marks its time after the last child has graduated from college.

5. Long term care or post-retirement life of their senior citizen.

6. Savings and investment.

Suarez added that having an entrepreneurial mindset is another pillar of wealth creation. Start with a small amount, but make the effort to start at all, Suarez urges. The key to cultivating the pillars of life are “discipline and commitment. Forget the jackpot mentality of enjoying all the money you have right now. What happens when all of it is gone?”

D' AMburger is a pet project of young and talented Filipino entrepreneurs Allan Chung and Chef Jellone Umali. They started selling their distinctive burgers for foodies on weekend night market Banchetto on Emerald Avenue in Ortigas.

The duo has now ventured business with executive Roslyne Barretto-Dimalibot and Bles Santos, thus the birth of D' AMburger Gastropub. Aside from exceptionally big and delicious burgers, they also offer healthy comfort food and gourmet food. Imported beers and cocktail drinks are also available at a very friendly price.

Yesterday was my scheduled quarterly TSH blood extraction (for my thyroid condition) at Makati Medical Center . It was one of those rare days when I don't feel like smiling and talking to anybody. I was not in my best mood, as it was very hot outside, I have my monthly period and did not sleep well the night before.

I felt so grumpy. The Medical Technologist assigned to extract the blood came in smiling, and said, "Ms. Josephine Mendiola, wait lang po, Ma'am". I stood up (already in my pagtataray moment) wanting to ask him if he's mad, but I held on and kept quiet not even nodding at him. Well, only my late mother called me Josephine - that's when she was mad.

As I was directed to sit, this Medical Technologist continued to display a pleasant disposition despite my crankiness. He was very courteous and explained thoroughly everything I asked him. Kahanga-hanga ka, ROSTAN VALDEZ for being very patient with the patient!

I went home in a better mood, this guy infected me with his sunny disposition.

BAMBU, the home of the famous Brazilian footwear brands, Ipanema, Grendha and Rider, has branches in Glorietta, TriNoma, Marquee Mall, Abreeza and Harbor Point. I have been in Bambu Trinoma twice but it is in Glorietta where I buy my pairs. The rest of Bambu store, I have yet to explore.

I'm very happy that last May 8, 2012, BAMBU Store at B-3 Bonifacio High Street, Taguig Cityofficially opened. I find the Fort a very relaxing place to shop, dine and plainly kill time.

Medicard's 25th Year Anniversary

It has been exactly 9 years this month when I resigned from Medicard and decided to be a producer (producing babies), a director ( directing orders at home) and a manager (managing the kids and family life as a whole).

I've worked for many companies in the past but it was with Medicard where I stayed the longest - almost 5 years. I started out as Human Resources Assistant, handling Recruitment, promoted as Training Officer and then transferred in Marketing as Marketing Services Officer. My goal was to stay with the company until I can walk no more. In short, til retirement age. But as always, fate has its own way of placing a man or a woman where he or she can function best. Like I mentioned above, I'm destined to be a producer, director and manager.

I go at Medicard's office once a year to visit my friends and bring my inaanaks (Godchildren) gifts. It's always nice to catch up on people I've grown to love but I can't stay long. Well, they're busy working.

Last December, my friend and kumpare, Eric, informed me of Medicard's upcoming 25th Year Anniversary inviting former employees, I immediately blocked May 11, 2012 schedule. I didn't accept any events for this day. It will be the best time to see my Medicard Family.

It was indeed a night to remember as I met all the wonderful people I've worked with in the past. It took me running here and there to get photos of them all. I guess, I miss some of them. As the saying goes, time runs fast when having fun.

The event was joyfully hosted by Marissa Sanchez. Performances by Sabado Boys, Ki-ki Girls, Wendy, Ms. Rose and other employees of Medicard. The company gave away cash prizes worth a million. I'm happy that my friend and kumpare, Omar, won fifty thousand pesos from the raffle.

Music Museum Scholars 2012

The 2012 MusiKabataan scholars of the Music Museum Group at the Music School of Ryan Cayabyab put on a great performance of Broadway classics and OPM shows at their Graduiation Recital held at The Teatrino at Promenade, Greenhills recently.

Seven new scholars -- Miah Isabelle Canton, Francis Marie Clemente, Darlene Louise Ordanza, Jessa Mari Ranque, Genesis Bryan Reyes, Ana Gabriela Vasquez and Maria Danica Velasco –performed songs from The Chorus Line, Miss Saigon, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fame, The Hunchback of Notre Dame as well as kundimans and OPM songs.

Musikabataan Advance scholars -- Banjo Gonzales, Rafael Gutierrez and Enzo Mendoza – wowed the audience with their tour de force numbers from Jesus Christ Superstar and amazed them with their adventurous excursions into musical sounds, personal compositions and theatrical performances.

The seven Musikabataan Primary scholars were the cream of the crop selected from a group of 100 teens aged 13 to 17 who auditioned in May 2011, while the three Musikabataan Advance scholars were the most talented of the 2010-2011 batch who were given the opportunity to pursue further training in musical performance, movement, note reading and musical composition.

The recital is the final stage of an intensive ten-month, three-level course training in music and performance under the tutelage of Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, his wife Emy and the staff of TMSRC.

Music Museum Group Incorporated Vice President Rosie Mendoza said the Music Museum is very satisfied with how the pool of talents discovered at the start of each year blossom into seasoned performers during their recitals. “We sincerely hope that the little push that we gave them through this program will also help them achieve their dreams of becoming the next generation of talents of our music industry,” she said.

The Music Museum’s music scholarship program was launched in 2008 during MMG’s 20^th anniversary as MMG’s way of giving back to the music and entertainment industry.

Is December 21, 2012 The End Of The World?

There is so much speculation building up as we get are getting closer and closer to the date December 21, 2012. It is the date that is predicted to be the end of days. Rumors have begun to spread around the globe that the elite are now building cities underground, where they can hide for survival on that day. The media has also now began jumping on the bandwagon as we are now

seeing so many documentaries coming out on TV regarding this controversial issue as well as articles on print media and doomsday websites on the Internet. So where did this all begin?

This so-called doomsday date December 21, 2012 actually comes to us from the Mayan calendar. The Mayan civilization, a civilization that ceased on earth centuries ago, was made up people who were very skilled mathematicians and astronomers. They keenly observed the movement of the planets and the stars because their livelihood depended on the precise mapping of the movements of these celestial bodies. The Mayan long count calendar is a product of these accurate astronomical observations made by these people centuries ago. What’s controversial is that their very accurate calendar ends precisely on December 21, 2012. Because of this, people around the globe have started to inquire and speculate as to why the Mayans ended their calendar on that specific date. Is it a prediction that the world will come to an end on that day?

Mara - Aspiring Model and Singer

Meet Mara. She is 15 years old, an incoming fourth year high school student. She was born in Long Beach, California to an American father and a Filipina mother. Mara and her mom went back to the Philippines in 1999, she was just 3 years old. When Mara was around eight years old, her dad wanted her to go back to America. Just her. Obviously, Mara's mom did not agree. Her father did not support Mara in anyway since then.

I first met Mara in 2009 at Grace to be Born - where she and her mom volunteers during weekends to tend to babies and pregnant moms in distress. I first noticed Mara's beautiful and expressive eyes, and of course her height. Her semblance to Wilma Doesnt and Tyra Banks was apparent, too. Mara's mom, Ate Lou, and I talked for long hours about Mara's dream of becoming a model. But due to financial constraint, she can't enroll to reputable modelling schools here in Manila.

Mara at 13 years old was already doing her share of socio-civic activity.

Last December 31, my husband took photos of Mara at The Legend Villas. Mara needed the pictures for her application in Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition. She was hoping to join the said reality show, unfortunately, she didn't make it.

A week ago, I posted about Julianne. Then I received an email from Mara telling me that she sings and plays the guitar as well. It was a surprise for me to know that this girl has a lot of talent. If honed, Mara can either be the next top model or a singer. Maybe both, why not?

Ate Lou joked, asking if I'd like to manage Mara. I declined politely. It's not my cup of tea (or maybe not yet?). This is my simple way of helping Mara - write about her aspirations, praying that talent managers take notice of this young hopeful. Maybe, just maybe, her look-alike and accomplished model, Wilma Doesnt read this post and take her under her wing, who knows...fate has its way.

Hats off to Hardworking Teachers

School life is one important aspect of children's growth and development. The students relationship with their teachers can either build or destroy their confidence.

I remember I learned the proper way of passing the scissors at Grade 1, with Mrs. Villanueva. Hated Math at Grade 2 because I was afraid with the very strict Mrs. Sedigo (peace Ma'am if you're reading this). I found strength and self-confidence at Grade 3 with the loving teaching of Mrs. Alejo.

My daughter is a very intelligent girl but shy to the bone. I am very grateful to her Grade 3 teacher - Mrs. Raissa Najaro Villaroya, for helping not just my daughter but her whole class to shine. Ms. Raissa, as she is fondly called by everyone, showed impartiality to all her students, making the girls of 3-Courtesy feel loved and respected equally.

To all the hardworking teachers, hats off to you - Madams and Sirs!

Julianne - Amazingly Impressive!

I seldom attend events lately to focus more on my family but Karen's invitation for Dermatopoietin Press Launch is one I didn't turn down for Karen is one of those people who's truly nice.

Makati is one place I will always love to hate. I find difficulty driving around here, ang daming one way! If you're not familiar with the place, hello ticket from traffic enforcers. Though the trip for this event gave me headache, it was all worth it because of the voice coming from this talented young performer - Julianne Tarroja, simply known as Julianne. Julianne serenaded the guests with her original songs, Fly and Queen, at the start. Wow, I told myself, an amazingly impressive voice! At the last part she made her own rendition of Coldplay's Yellow. Since Yellow is one of my favorite songs, I stood from where I was seated and captured it on video. Grabe, I almost cried when she finished singing. Damang dama ang pagkanta, ang galing pang tumipa ng gitara!

As a busy mom, I don't have much time listening to new artists. I settle listening to the songs of senior singers like Sampaguita, err, Barbie naman! It was my first time to see and hear Julianne that day. Right after the event, I took the opportunity to come up to her and tell her how good she is. I admire people with good voice, specially female singers who plays the guitar. It was nice of her to listen to my babbling. Told her it's my frustration to be a singer, and that in my next life (if there is) I'd like nothing but be a singer, one that plays guitar - just like her.

To be able to share this video of Julianne here in my blog I uploaded it at Youtube. It's my first time to do this, ang tagal pala or am I just not into this stuff that I don't know how to do it the easy way? I started last night at 10pm, finished uploading at exactly 4:10 am today and still typing now at almost 6am. While uploading, I read articles about Julianne. She's under Genesis. She's one amazing talent to support for there's a lot to like about her - not only for her voice but more so her great personality. On a personal note, I like her name because my daughter is named Julia and she looks a lot like my cousin, Love. These and more I also told Julianne. Hopefully, di sya nakulitan sa kadadaldal ko. Naniniwala ka pa ba?

Around 9pm last night friends dropped by at home. When all the guests went home, Juan started vomiting for no apparent reason. The vomitting continued overnight prompting us to change the bedsheets and pillow cases many times. I was already thinking of 'usog' but living in the modern times made me think twice.

Usog may mean two things for Filipinos. First, usog means move. The second one doesn't have an English meaning probably because it is not a part of other countries' culture. Usog is sometimes called bati. Usog happens when someone notice or said something to another, then that person will get dizzy, will vomit or will be feverish.

Many Filipinos believe that when a person is 'na-usog' or na-bati, you have to ask the person who naka-usog to rub or put saliva on the affected person's tummy. I hear yuck and eww from my children as I write this post. If the first option is not possible, an alternative antidote is to boil the last clothes the person was wearing, let it cool, then wipe that clothes to the na-usog person. It took me hours before finally deciding to do just that to Juan. And in an instant, Juan turned okay, as if nothing happened.

There's no medical and or scientific explanation to this, but then a mother has to do whatever it takes to make everything alright for the sake of her child.

Kid's Oral Hygiene - Parent's Responsibility

My friend told me that one of her friend's kids is due for operation because of plaque gone unnoticed. The operation will cost them around forty thousand pesos. The mom of this boy even said, "ayaw kasi mag toothbrush e". We, parents MUST remember that the oral hygiene of the kids is the responsibility of the parents. Kids will be kids. At this stage in their lives, children by nature feel as though brushing teeth is a big task. Very young children has no sense of responsibility, if not properly guided by parents, kids will choose not to brush their teeth. It is easier for stay-at-home parents like us to monitor our children's oral hygienee because we're at home 24/7. For working parents, I suggest you talk to your nannies about this. Make sure that your child is involved about the talk, so when yaya say, brush teeth na, remember what your mom and dad said?

Keep in mind the following:

1. Baby teeth are important and must be taken care of until they are replaced by the permanent teeth.

For infants, use a piece of gauze wrapped around the index finger to clean the gumpads and teeth every feeding, specially before sleeping.

For Children with baby teeth, use baby toothbrush to clean the baby teeth.

For school-aged children (4-10 years old) parents should supervise them in tooth brushing and flossing since they need enough motivation to perform these tasks.

2. Easy on Sweets. Frequency of eating sweets and the time the food stay in the mouth plays an important role in the development of tooth decay. Give sweets less often and preferably with meals. A child's mouth should be immediately cleaned after eating. If this is not possible, at least rinse vigorously with water.

3. Look for a good dentist that the child will be comfortable with. Bring them to the dentist for casual visits, not when they already have tooth problems. This way the kids won't have negative notion of dental clinic and the dentist.

T-Shirt Painting and Spray Painting

Summer is still a long way to go. The kids are bored when doing nothing. John and I do not allow our children to watch too much television and play too much computers and other gadget. To keep the kids busy and promote creativity we bought them materials for painting, such as Textile paints of varying colors - around P50 each at National Bookstore, paint brushes, plain shirts - P120 at Regina's, newspapers - to keep the area clean, and water.

For the kids who's not much into painting or art, try battery operated Spray Art or the like. It comes with stencils that has different shapes such as flowers, sea creatures, fruits etc.

This activity is a sure hit to kids and friends who come over for slumber party.

The Avengers - A Movie for the Whole Family

We don't go out on a Wednesday because our car is coding on this day. But last Wednesday, we storm the road - beating the coding window, to see the Avengers on its first day of showing. Shang Cinema - where we normally watch, has sold out tickets a week before so we headed at Greenhills Theater to try our luck. The teller said that as early as 10 am, tickets are sold out for the 6pm, 7pm, 9pm and so on. We settled for a 4:20 pm showing. For lack of choices, we were seated at the side which gave me stiff neck!

After the movie, I asked my husband to make a review of The Avengers. He refused to because he reads Marvel comics so his review will definitely be different from what most will expect. Just the same, he said the movie is great, it's action-packed and the efforts they put in giving all the characters equal exposure is to be praised. He added, The Avengers is a movie for the whole family, especially the kids.

My view: This is not a review, I don't want to spoil it for those who hasn't seen the movie. I'll be talking more about the actors here. I slept for the first 10 minutes or so. Not that I didn't like the movie, buy hey, I didn't get enough sleep the night before.

Robert Downey Jr. played his role very well as Iron Man. When asked, "what are you without the suit?". He replied confidently, "a genius, billionaire, playboy, philantropist".

Chris Hemsworth as Thor, made Julia's and my eyes stuck on the screen. He's so good looking! There's an angle where he looked like the younger Brad Pitt.

Captain America is played by Chris Evans - who's also one good-looking guy, but not my type. I like men with long hair. I like Chris better when he played the role of Johnny Storm at Fantastic Four.

Mark Ruffalo played the Hulk. It would have been nicer if Eric Bana played this role. His physique would match that of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth. My husband on the otherhand prefers Edward Norton. Peace to all Mark Ruffalo's fans out there. Mark is a great actor, I just don't find him handsome enough compared with all the other actors in the movie.

Hawk Eye is played by Jeremy Renner. Nothing much to say about this guy, I'll just wait for his Bourne Legacy movie.

Scarlett Johansson, as Black Widow, will always make women envious. That great bod!

Juan Found the One

Among my 3 kids, Juan - the youngest is the easiest to please. He is one happy boy - probably because he breastfed the longest. Actually, he's still nursing at 6 years and 2 months, I wonder when he's gonna stop.

He doesn't ask much for as long as he sees green, it's his.

This is Juancho's rubber slippers, Reva, which he has been using for the last 4 years. His heels are over it, he can't run and walk well because it doesn't fit him anymore. His dad and I convinced him a lot of times to give it up but he can't let go.

When he saw this pair of Rider slippers (R1 Play Kids, P695) at Bambu - Glorietta 4, I knew that Juan found the one to replace his worn out slippers. He even said, "Mom, my old pair is small na, can you buy me this one please". Gusto ko sanang sabihin, dalawang taon ng maliit sayo yan anak, but that would mean longer conversation or debate as Juan knows how to go around the circles.
