Goodbye and Thank you 2016

There were a lot of unhappy memories that made me cry in 2016. We lost my father last April 9, Aunt Luding passed away in May. Mom-in-law was hospitalized due to diabetes in June. I lost a friend in July. In September, my husband was found to have cardiomyopathy. By December, my thyroid biopsy result stated "nodular hyperplasia". Nodular  hyperplasia can be benign or cancerous.

As soon as I got the biopsy result, the doctor recommended thyroidectomy. I'm supposed to have the operation done last December 29 but decided to weigh options.

Despite the unexpected unhappy events, The Year of the Monkey brought many good memories as well, like being a part of a winning music video Di Na Muli, tv guestings, paid blog postings, and sponsorships. Most important of all, my family became closer and more loving.

With that said, goodbye and thank you 2016. I welcome and embrace all the best things in 2017!

NETFLIX PHILIPPINES YEAR IN REVIEW

Netflix for everyone, whatever your entertainment tastes are.

Netflix original content offers something for everyone from drama to comedy series, from docu-series, to stand-up specials to films. As we’ve gotten to know people’s tastes, we’ve been shaping the service, adding content, languages and new features to provide the best possible Netflix experience. Here’s how:

No more waiting: Internet TV, delivered by Netflix, is changing entertainment forever by putting power in consumers’ hands. Netflix original series, films and documentaries premiere on Netflix everywhere at the same time, whether Narcos, Marvel’s Luke Cage or The Crown which means all Netflix members have access to a new title simultaneously.

Original Series and Films: We committed to spending $5 billion on content in 2016, releasing 31 scripted shows (existing and new), two dozen original feature films and documentaries, a wide range of stand up comedy specials and 30 original kids series.

Increasing the Catalog: We have doubled the content catalog for users around the world.

What we learned about how people in The Philippines binge:
Some of the most popular shows for the year in The Philippines: Orange is The New Black, Stranger Things, Narcos, House of Cards, The OA, Marvel’s Luke Cage, The Crown, Designated Survivor.
At which point did they get Hooked? We found that viewers today do not base their decision to finish a series on the first episode alone. On average, it took 4 episodes for Filipinos to get hooked on a show. For example, when they watched superhero action shows Marvel’s Daredevil and Marvel’s Jessica Jones. Filipino viewers easily get hooked early on with shows that allow them to live vicariously through law-breaking characters featured in shows such as Narcos, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul.
Binge-pairing: Like Netflix members around the world, Filipinos tend to pair their TV binge with a movie right after. Fans who loved Stranger Things wanted more of the same great thrills and chose Super 8, another sci-fi thriller set in the 80s. Meanwhile, Marvel’s Daredevil fans who hankered for more grim and gritty action and turned to Kill Bill Vol. 1

Delivering a great Netflix experience is just as important as creating great content.

We committed to spending $800 million on technology and development in 2016. Here are key innovations we rolled out in 2016:

Personalization and the global algorithm: Previously, the personalization algorithms were regional or country-specific -- limiting a member’s recommendations to be based on similar viewers’ tastes confined to their particular country or region. By creating a global recommendation system, Netflix is now able to provide an even more accurate personalization experience, based not just on one country’s tastes, but by looking at the tastes of members around the world. This also helps local content travel around the world.

Downloads: We’ve often heard our users share that they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on a road trip and other places where Internet is expensive or limited. Now you can download and watch shows without an internet connection on Netflix.

Open Connect Devices.  Our Open Connect devices are provided free to ISPs to allow them to more efficiently manage their networks. We have devices present around the Asia region today to support a better streaming experience for users in the Philippines

Video previews: We know we have less than 90 seconds to capture someone’s attention and get them excited about a title -- that’s why we’re introducing video previews into the TV browsing experience. The new television user interface uses video more extensively to bring content alive in real time and helps members decide whether to click play.

4K/HDR Technology: One of the advantages of streaming over the Internet is we get to be at the cutting edge of technology, providing the best picture quality for our members all over the world. Added over 600 of 4K content, Shows like the latest season of Chef’s Table, Marvel’s Daredevil now in HDR and we are working with Marvel on their entire slate.

Partnerships/Devices: By partnering with consumer electronics companies, ISPs and mobile operators, including Globe and PLDT, we help provide a better streaming experience for consumers and enable Netflix everywhere. Many of these partnerships help drive constant innovation at Netflix, and also improve overall industry standards so that ultimately consumers everywhere get the best entertainment experience they can hope for.
Netflix Recommended TV program: An independent smart TV evaluation program to help consumers identify televisions built for a superior Internet TV experience. Netflix Recommended TVs by LG, Samsung and Sony are available in the Philippines and around the world.

NETFLIX INTO 2017
Next year, we plan to launch over 1,000 hours of original content including:
Marvel’s Iron Fist
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Sense8 S02
Master of None S02
Stranger Things S02
War Machine
The Discovery
The Defenders
Santa Clarita Diet

Leah Rose Alberto-Punzalan at 49

I have five siblings. Three sisters and 2 brothers. When we were young, we were not that close as I remember. I think that's just how it is when children are immature to realize how important each member of the family. When we lost Mama in 1993, we became closer. Now that Papa is gone too, we value our time together and make the most of it.

Last month at our eldest sister, Ate Rose, birthday in Bulacan...

Benito Turned 7

Turning 7 years old in the Philippines is quite a big thing. I don't know when and how it started, I just woke up one day seeing my friends worrying about how to throw that great big party. To tell you frankly, the simplest birthday celebration is actually the best because you parents don't have to spend and worry so much about having that perfect party. Plus, guests can go in their most comfortable clothes. Most importantly, the birthday boy or girl gets to spend his or her birthday with the people he or she loves mostin your life.

Last month as Benito Turned 7, his mom Fleur asked me to do an impromptu games. Without prep, a host must think fast, and here are the games we did, Balloon Relay, Shop for Items That Starts with The Letter B, Longest Happy Birthday - Kids Edition, Longest Happy Birthday - Moms Edition and Coin Shower.

Pimple Treatment at Diana Stalder

One of the common problems among teenagers is having pimples. The development of pimples is primarily connected to oil production, clogged pores and bacteria. Others say eating fatty food, chocolates and sleeping late also contributes to having pimples. Pimples vary in size and usually appear on the face, neck and back.

Although I was spared of this problem when I was young, my son Rafael is not.  When he turned 13 last year he started having pimples from time to time until it turned worst this year. To tell you frankly, I already brought Rafael to three different skin clinics but to no avail. So early this month I decided to bring him at Diana Stalder for consultation.

Consultation is free but the procedure will vary from one skin problem to another. It starts withn the basic filling up of forms, then a short interview with a skin therapist or the clinic staff. Then a thourough evalution of skin and skin problems with a dermatologist.

If you agree with the procedure recommended by the dermatologist, you will proceed with the treatment (provided there's a vacant slot).

I will be documenting Rafael's journey of Pimple Treatment at Diana Stalder in the coming weeks. For now, feel free to watch this video...

The Junior Preneur at The Pioneer St Market

The Junior Preneur at The Pioneer St Market last December 4th, 2016 has once again ignited the entrepreneur spirit of my son, Juan, as well as the other kids who joined the event where they learned to do actual work thru manning their own,  donate to a foundation, and deposit part of his earnings as his savings.

The organization behind Junior Preneur, founded by Mother Entrepreneurs Cherry S. Genato and Mafae Yunon - Belasco, Bb.Pilipinas - World 2003,  aims to increase financial literacy in the Philippines by introducing the concept of business thru a 1-day program designed to teach kids how to earn money thru hard work, save earnings and share earnings to less fortunate children. As a culminating activity, the kids will be awarded with Business Certificates to make this day more symbolic for them.

A Kiss From Superman

Let's face it, life's too short not to be able to do things out of the ordinary so I always make it a point to be bold and brave and do things spontaneously. Last ToyCon 2016, I'm supposed to ask three questions from Dean Cain, instead I made the last as a request. Yes, I requested a kiss from Superman!

Groupon Coupons

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine .

Being a self-supporting student in college, I learned early on how to save money so I can pay for my tuition, buy stuff for my younger brother and younger sister and for myself. I had to be practical in everything I do and to do that I make sure I buy when there are sale items.  Nowadays, I use discount coupons that is mostly available online. This way I save money and time while purchasing at the comforts of my own bedroom.

There are plenty of coupons available out there but my most favorite is Groupon Coupons. With Groupon Coupons, I'm sure that sellers or retailers offers the best discounts. An example is that of Shoes For Crews Coupon Codes & Promo Codes and Blue Nile Promo Codes & Coupon Codes.

At Blue Nile, you can buy gifts and jewelries with diamonds and other expensive materials. Their discounts starts at 10% up to 50%, while some retailers offer free shipping.

At Shoes For Crews, you get discounts from 5% up to 50%. One must hurry though because their coupons are running out fast!

With just a click of a button, searching for coupons is way too easy for a non-techie mom like me! Plus the fact that I don’t have to pay for a membership or other hidden fees, shopping is easy with #GrouponCoupons .

Let me know if you visit the site and feel free to email me of your experience in using coupons.

Julia and Rafael's 14th Birthday

I had difficulty conceiving because of endometriosis so when Julia and Rafael were born on December 8, 2002, we make it a point to have thanksgiving celebration every year.

We call it thanksgiving instead of party because we do it in a simple way - by reconizing the people they spend five days a week. Saan pa ba kundi sa school!

Last December 8 I went to the twins school andt brought pizza for Julia and Rafael's respective sections, Flemming and Hooke. We also gave pizza to the teachers and the school satff.

Then we had a simple dinner at home with family and some friends who live nearby. The dinner was made fun with the ballon decor that my husband did. John placed a piece of paper with a corresponding amount of money inside the balloon,

You shoud try this birthday game idea! You hit two birds in one, decor and game, how cool is that!

San Pedro BBQ Sauce

It was my frist time to know about San Pedro BBQ Sauce when Mommy Louisa of Mommy Bloggers introduced it to me last month. San Pedro BBQ Sauce at Iba pa was initially an attempt to come up with a small business of selling barbeque on the streets until people started requesting for buying marinated meat whenever the BBQ store is closed.     This triggered the idea of selling the yummy fusion in a bottle.

Why buy San Pedro BBQ Sauce? Allow me enumerate the reasons...

1. For every bottle you buy, 5 pesos will be donated to cancer patients.
2. It has a shelf life of 1 year.
3. It has a perfect blend of salty and sweet with a kick of pepper
4. One bottle can be used for a max of 1 & ½ kilo of meat.
5. Easy to use, just shake, pour into your chosen meat and you're good to go.

NETFLIX BINGE ROUTINE

As Pinoys, we like pairing things and stuff like dinuguan with puto, champorado with tuyo and kape at pandesal.  Some things are better together, and it turns out TV and movies are one of those pairings. According to research from Netflix*, a new trend in watching has emerged with more than 30 million Netflix members around the world weaving film into their binge routines.

After finishing a series, a majority of Netflix members (59%) take a pause, usually lasting three days, before committing to a new show. During that break, more than half (61%) watch a movie to keep the binge feeling alive, like pairing the satirical comedy The Truman Show to the delightfully quirky Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or the criminally comedic The Big Short to the dramatically comedic Orange is the New Black.

“In our ongoing effort to make great programming decisions for our members we found movies play a unique role in their evolving binge watching routines,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix. “It’s interesting to see a third of our members adopt this pattern and the movies those 30 million go on to pair with series, but what I find most compelling is how consistently our members expand the role movies play in their lives on Netflix.”

When looking globally into what movies most often followed some of today’s top series, interesting pairings emerged. After watching House of Cards, some members moved to Beasts of No Nation swapping politics for war, but keeping a narrative deft with uncompromising and ruthless leaders. Vince Gilligan’s cinematic nod to Tarantino in Breaking Bad didn’t go unnoticed with watchers moving on to Pulp Fiction after Mr. White bid his final adieu. Meanwhile, fast talking fans of Gilmore Girls kept their retro references fresh by revisiting movies like Clueless and The Notebook.

Members also turned to documentary films to fuel their post-binge craving. After watching Narcos, viewers fueled their cartel curiosity with Cartel Land. Watchers of Marvel’s Luke Cage continued the pursuit for justice with 13TH while fans of Black Mirror saw the real consequences of technology in Hot Girls Wanted.

An exception to this pattern - comedy. When watchers are in the mood for a different entertainment rhythm they tend to choose comedy as their series pair. This stands especially true for horror series where viewers of the frightful most often turn to comedy before moving to the next nail biter. For instance, fans of Stranger Things turned to Big Daddy to help shake off the thrills while watchers of Scream  traded terror for comedy like The Do-Over.

Filipino fans followed similar patterns of staying with the same genre and style of the series. For example, those who loved Stranger Things wanted more of the same great thrills and chose Super 8, another sci-fi thriller set in the 80s. Meanwhile, Marvel’s Daredevil fans who hankered for more grim and gritty action turned to Kill Bill Vol. 1.

According to the research, here are some popular series-movie pairings:

*Methodology:
Netflix analyzed the viewing data of over 86 million members across more than 190 countries between January 2016 and October 2016. The research examined variation in member’s viewing patterns in relation to TV series and movies. In this research, Netflix found when members switched from one series (completing all seasons available) to another, 59% of the time they took at least a one-day breather with a median gap of 2.5 days. During this breather, 61% of those members watched a standalone title (documentary, movie or stand-up special) before beginning the next series. In total, 36% of all Netflix members demonstrate this behavior. Members did not have to complete a series in a certain amount of time in order to be included in the research. To determine example series and movie pairs, Netflix analyzed more than 100 TV series to identify which movies were paired most frequently per market. The movie pairings do not equate to viewership numbers.

 ABOUT NETFLIX
Netflix is the world’s leading Internet television network with over 86 million members in over 190 countries enjoying more than 125 million hours of TV shows and movies per day, including original series, documentaries and feature films. Members can watch as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, on nearly any Internet-connected screen. Members can play, pause and resume watching, all without commercials or commitments.

Groupon Goods

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

It is definitely true that Christmas is the happiest month of all months. We must also acknowledge the fact that it is the busiest and craziest as people try to complete all the presents for family, relatives, loved ones, friends, neighbors and workmates.

With the holidays just around the corner,  I'm sure everyone is cramming and feeling stressed. I do not worry that much because Groupon makes it easy  for me to go holiday shopping with the wide variety of Groupon Goods offered on the site.  As a practical mom, I dislike spending much for any annual membership and other hidden fees. With #Groupon, it’s totally free, plus shopping is easy as A-B-C!

For my nephews, brothers, uncles and male friends, I'm checking out the wide array of shirts. I'd like to give each a statement shirt that represents their respective views in life.

For nieces, sisters, aunts and female friends, I giving out beauty products depending on what they need and asked for.

For my children - Julia, Rafael and Juan, I'm buying gadgets that they need for their activities in school as well as for entertainment.

For husband, him being a toy collector, I'm definitely buying anything that has Marvel, DC and other heroes in it.

And finally for myself (yes, moms need to give herself a gift!) I'm shopping for clothes and accessories that I can use for 2017 events!

Chef Jessie at The Maya Kitchen's Culinary Elite Series Christmas Table

When Mel informed me about  Chef Jessie at The Maya Kitchen's Culinary Elite Series Christmas Table event, I immediately cleared my schedule for December 10 because I'm a big fan of this chef who's life is an inspiration to many.

The #Mendiolables had the privilege of meeting multi-awarded chef Chef Jessie Sincioco and feature her restaurant Chef Jessie at The Rockwell Club last year.

As Chef Jessie showcased her creativity and passion for creating a sumptuous Christmas table at the event, she was proudly telling the crowd that it was The Maya Kitcken via Great Maya Cookfest that paved the way to her culinary world. Along with her commitment to her craft, and her innovative spirit, Chef Jessie’s career reached new heights as she earned multiple prestigious awards and became a premier restaurateur. She is now the President and CEO of her very own company, JCS Gastronomies Inc., and runs hands-on, the finest restaurants in the metro, Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie and Chef Jessie Rockwell Club.

With her busy schedule, Chef Jessie returned to the Maya Kitchen and shared her very own Christmas menu with tips and ideas about preparing a delightful Christmas table.  She also used local ingredients from the appetizers to the dessert to showcase Filipino at its best.

The menu includes Smoked Milkfish & Bihod Pie with Croutons and Mesclun of Local Greens with Marigold & Crispy Coconut Flakes in Coco-Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing as appetizers. For the main course, she prepares a Cochinillo Stuffed with Atchara Rice, a special Kinulob na Chicken recipe, and Tiger Prawns with Laing. For dessert, Chef Jessie prepares a Dark Chocolate Fudge Orange Cupcake out of local Cacao de Bola.

The Joy of Sharing Bubbleman with Carla Cusinera

Carla Asence-Bangay is a mother of two and  a pastry Chef who's more popularly known as Carla Cusinera in the baking industry. I met her just this year at The Maya Kitchen and I must say, she's a good teacher/instructor, aside from being a great pastry chef. The way she teaches baking is fun and funny at the same time. No dull moments at all.

At a young age of 6m Carla knew she loves cooking. Her aunt and uncle are her biggest influence since she was a kid when it comes to cooking. At Grade 4, she attended  Cravings' Summer Cooking Class.

I always believe that if you're meant for something that is where the wind will blow the direction. Carla went into different kinds of business from selling bags, putting up a carinderia, food cart and food photography. Until Carla Cusinera made into business last May 2015, Carla Cusinera has a huge following nowadays!

The Joy of Sharing Bubbleman with Carla Cusinera is something I will cherish because she let me in her home. The warmth of her place, plus the smell of baking goodies, is so much to thank for.

The Joy of Sharing Bubbleman with BDJ Girlfriends

Zen and I met some 10 years ago when our kids became classmate in Pre-School. Zen, introduced Belle De Jour Power Planner to me and we attended BDJ events some years back where we met Nikki and Beth. As they say, the rest is history. Though we don't get to see often, our friendship is one that is fun, supportive and loving.

It's really hard for us to meet because of our respective duties and responsibilities and add so we try as much to meet for our annual Christmas party.

Despite the traffic we met last night at Burgoo in Powerplant Mall and did our tradition of exchange gift. Beth gave lunch boxes and seaweed snacks; Nikki gave lemon squeezers, Zen gave watches and I gave them The Joy of Sharing Bubbleman!

We had so much fun that the audio of my celphone couldn't compete with our voices.
